Waitwaitwait....about that music directory....

Would the Graduale(s) and Gregorian Missal be prohibited from being used at Mass, since they would not contain the core repertoire???

I am half-joking; I can’t imagine the wording wouldn’t involve “other than the approved liturgical books, this repertoire must be included”. Still, it would be kinda funny (and sad, too) if they overlooked this one. I mean, yeah, sad, but .... in a laughing-at-ourselves kind of way, it would be a funny “oops - forgot about that” moment. :)

No, they'll make Solesmes publish the "Graduale Americanum", with all the propers AND "On Eagle's Wings".

Personally, I think this is a bad idea. My thoughts are that us the musicians (well, those who don't know how to play guitar) should be the ones to decide what the "core repertoire" is :P I know what some of the bishops are like - they're the last people I want telling me what to play.

Another concern - are hymnal supplements included in this requirement? Isn't that a bit... stupid if they are? I ask because at my church my boss and I are considering making a supplement for our parish with what we consider to be "important" Catholic hymnody. Do we have to include "Pan de Vida" in it just because some bishop in California thinks that's important?

I asked this a month or two ago, but in regard to "minor" hymnals like Adoremus, Collegeville, and the like. Will second editions of these books be required to have the core? It would seem to be unfair to ask only the big three to comply. Who decides when a publisher or hymnal gets big enough to be put into that universe?

Another few questions: Will other publishers then be put in a position to buy other copyrights for copyrighted songs in the core? Or will the bishops buy the rights for the songs chosen?

Maybe the onus will be on parishes - if you have a hymnal in your pews, it’s gotta have the core.

But then, what of parishes without a hymnal. Geez....there’s so much grey area here. I am starting to agree with those who say this whole idea is rather silly.

Now, if they were approving an English translation of the Gregorian propers...*that* would be something worth having, IMO.
